Subscription Traps and How to Avoid Them
Free trials, confusing cancellation flows, and renewal surprises explained.

Convenient to start should mean convenient to stop.
Understand the conversion point
Before beginning a free or discounted trial, note when it becomes paid, how much the normal price is, and whether the term renews monthly or annually.
Take a screenshot of the offer and set a reminder several days before renewal. Do not rely on the company sending a reminder unless the terms promise one.
Recognise cancellation friction
Warning signs include hidden account menus, repeated retention screens, mandatory phone calls for an online purchase, or unclear confirmation that cancellation is complete.
After cancelling, keep the confirmation email and check the next statement. Removing an app does not normally cancel its subscription.
Dispute carefully
Contact the company first with dates and evidence. If billing continues after confirmed cancellation, ask your payment provider about the appropriate dispute process and stop-payment options.
